2010 Census…senseless
Is anyone else sick of seeing the Census advertisements on TV? I mean, really…does the Government seriously believe that they need to advertise to get people involved? If so, then it might be worth scrapping the whole project. I don’t know how much the Government is spending on promoting the Census, but it must be alot. I see Census advertisements on during primetime which does not come cheap. Now, the cherry on top…the Census bureau just spent $2.5M to advertise during the Superbowl in an effort to gain participation in the Census.
Guess that all of the directions they provide and the fines they threaten are just not enough. Boy…that is using our tax dollars wisely, huh?!?

The unfortunate bottom line is the government thinks it necessary to spend millions of tax dollars on paid advertising because far too many Americans simply refuse to pay attention to anything that is not fun and entertaining.
It’s the real reason for this most recent $2.5 million expenditure. It’s also the reason for so much bad government policy that slips through virtually unnoticed while millions stay glued to the latest reality TV shows, social networking sites or sporting events; refusing to give up just a few minutes a day to get informed about the real world.

good point, linda. americans are so attached to their boob tubes that they cant even get off the couch long enough to take a walk for their health. much less to actually learn about their government. how much does the president make? how much do football players make? we have forgotten our priorities. i can see why the census is advertising. it is the best way to get the message out. but it is sad that our tax dollars are being used to reach the dumb people.

@ Linda – If that’s not hitting the nail on the head, I don’t know what is. Average American watches something like 5 hours of TV per day. I just wonder how many people “zone out” and fail to absorb the commercials. Of course, everything we come in contact with influences our behavior. Have you read this post – http://voodoomanager.com/you-have-no-idea-what-you-are-doing-really
@ Billy – What I would like to know is who authorizes the Census Bureau to utilize funds in advertising. It almost seems like this would be illegal.
@ All – Is the Census really worth all the effort anymore? I mean, States allocate funds as need be and really, most of our projects are socialized anyway. So, why have a Census?
